SINGAPORE - For trying to smuggle SG$ 7 million (about US$ 5.44 million) in casino winnings, a South Korean man was fined earlier this week by authorities.
Last August 24, Kim Woo Yeong was apprehended by airport authorities at the Changi Airport Budget Terminal after an x-ray scan of his two traveling bags revealed that these contained a bunch of paper. Physical inspection of the Kim's bag revealed that the bags contained money.
The South Korean who is based in the Philippines said that the money were casino winnings of his uncle, Park Dong Choel. Kim added that he was just trying to help his uncle bring the cash out of Singapore.
Singaporean laws state that any person who wants to move money above SG$ 30,000 in and out of the country must declare it.
Kim admitted that he had received such an advice from a Marina Bay Sands executive he had consulted but nevertheless opted to try his luck of smuggling the cash winnings out of Singapore. Unfortunately, lady luck wasn't with him at the airport.
For such a daring but nevertheless illegal act, Kim was fined SG$ 30,000.
